Employee Focus

I can't tell you the number of seminar's I have attended where they talk about leadership and action. Do this, do this, do this, etc. They all seem to have a constant theme, which by the way isn't wrong! In fact, most of the center of their thoughts are the same...

Today is the perfect day to start!

Approach 1:

Monday, begin your day by taking time to ask your assistant about their weekend. But get past the pleasantries quick! Approach them in a non-abrasive way, like talking about your failed attempt at doing something this past weekend. Take the defensive walls down and let them share a bit more with you. If they are hesitating, ask them if they could do one thing during a weekend off, what would it be!

Approach 2:

Wednesday, invite one of your employee's into your office. If you don't typically do this, they might seem anxious. But utilize this time to evaluate their role - from their opinion. What does the position need to succeed more? Affirm their current state. Don't spend ANY time with 'small-talk' in this approach. Get right to the meat and bones of their role. Remember you type-A personalities...this is NOT the time to give them a review or correct what they are saying. Utilize this time to practice your listening skills!

Approach 3:

Friday, get to the office before everyone else and say later than everyone else. Make sure coffee is ready in the office and that the lights are on. When each person enters, make sure they know you are there by doing small things such as parking right in front of your building or leaving your office door wide open or filling your coffee mug 1/3 of the cup so you refill frequently.

We started taking this approach a few months back and WOW...a seed started to plant.

As a female CEO, I find myself constantly being judged and I find myself always trying to do approach number 3. But I am looking forward to trying approach 1 and 2. What are your thoughts about female CEO's?
